I get asked this question a lot… and to be honest, all chili peppers are pretty awesome. But my favorites are the Fresno and Red Jalapeño. These two chili peppers are very similar but not exactly the same. For example… Fresno peppers have thinner walls. This makes the jalapeño better for stuffing. My favorite stuffing is cream cheese with shrimp and then wrap the jalapeño in bacon and put it on the grill. It’s delicious!
Besides the fact that jalapeños are better for stuffing, both types of peppers have almost the same heat. There is something called the Scoville scale, which measures heat. They are both in the medium range which means they aren’t as hot as a ghost pepper but you will still feel the heat when you eat them!
Now back to my favorite… If I have to choose between the two, Fresnos are my favorite. They have a slightly different flavor that I like the best. As they ripen, their flavor is smokier and fruiter which makes an awesome hot sauce and spice rub. They get their name from Fresno, California, which is where they are from. Sometimes it’s difficult to find them in supermarkets but when you do, make sure you try them!
